Dangers of Sleep Driving

Over the past few years there have been a number of very serious accidents whose causes can be traced back to a tired driver. Recent studies have show that a tired driver can be more dangerous on the motorway than a drunk driver.

The reason for this is that you have very little thinking to do on a quiet motorway at 2am, too often people don't consider there is a danger until it is too late. We realise that sometimes driving while tired in unavoidable but there are things that you can do to reduce the risks to yourself and others.

1) If you can plan your journey in advance, do so. This should help you to avoid driving late at night when the danger is most apparent.

2) When you know you'll be driving long distances, try to ensure you get a good nights sleep the night before. This will help your body to stay alert for longer during the day.

3) If you feel drowsy, always turn the heating down. You're better off being slightly colder because this will keep you awake.

4) It can also be a good idea to open a window and turn up the radio. The more things you can do to make yourself stay awake the better, singing along to the radio can also work very well.

5) Take regular breaks. Spending too long behind the wheel can be one of the biggest causes of accidents, make sure that you take regular break and get a cup of coffee at a service station if possible as this can help to alleviate tiredness.

It is worth noting that if you cause an accident while driving tired, you can be charged by the police, is it really worth it?

We would advise everyone to make sure they avoid driving while tired because of the danger to yourself and others, take your time and make sure you take plenty of breaks.
