Mobile phones - the law when driving
Recent laws imposed by the government have made it illegal for a driver to be using their phone whilst driving in a car except when combined with the use of hands free units.
Driving a car whilst on the phone is looked on as dangerous for a few reasons which include:
Concentration - Your concentration can be taken away from the road, when on the phone you can become engrossed in a conversation that can take your attention away from what is happening on the road. When answering the phone it is human nature to look at the screen to see who is calling, in this split second your eyes are off the road a child could have run out in front of you or the traffic in front could have stopped suddenly.
Physical impairment - When using your mobile in the car you only have one hand on the steering wheel. This physical impairment reduces your control over the car and greatly increases the risk of accident.
Drivers caught by the police using a mobile phone illegally risk a fixed fine and the addition of three penalty points to their licence, not to mention the lecture from the police officer. Increased amounts of penalty points on a drivers licence can lead to increased car insurance premiums and with the accumulation of enough points a driving ban.
Hands free kits are readily available on today's market and are often included when you but your mobile. These kits come in a massive range of prices so there is no excuse for not having one, in fact if you can't afford one then should you have a mobile at all? Be safer on the road and connect to a hands free or better still turn off when driving, help to reduce the risk of accident, keep those penalty points down and therefore benefit from cheaper car insurance.
