Police Clamp down on uninsured vehicles

Since April 2005, when the police launched their, crackdown on uninsured vehicles Operation Takeaway they claim that over 1,000 vehicles have been seized. Operation Takeaway was begun in County Durham and has since been spread throughout the country.

Unlike the old system where if the police stopped you they would give you a producer allow you to drive off, your car will now be seized and you will be given 14 days to prove you have valid motor insurance. On top of this you will be charge the towing cost which is about £105 and the daily storage charge is £12.

If you don't provide proof that the car was insured, the car will be crushed and you will face prosecution for driving with no car insurance.

So far the police statistics have shown that they are very serious, as they have crushed over 632 vehicles to date.

The system has been so effective because of new technology such a new database of all the insured vehicles in the UK and number plate recognition cameras.

The police claim that the campaign may have prevented over 2,000 potential accidents.
