Uninsured drivers effect cheap car insurance premiums

There is still concern over the number of uninsured drivers on our roads despite last years Greenaway report.Much progress has been made, specifically in the area of police access to the Motor Insurance Database (MID) which allows them to easily identify uninsured drivers. Combinbed with an extra £15m of funds which has been allocated to number-plate reading cameras, more vehicles than ever can now be identified and stopped using new technology.

The Government is being asked to introduce a new offence of keeping a vehicle without insurance, which would allow motorists to be fined for possessing an uninsured, taxed vehicle, even if they did not catch it on the road.Other legal redress has allowed the police to seize and even destroy uninsured vehicles to increase the available penalties.
One of the biggest problems is the issue of young drivers. Due to the claims experience, young motorists face expensive car insurance premiums which can deter them from insuring their vehicle.

The only way to tackle this is through improving young drivers' road safety record and the ABI is preparing to launch a major campaign targeted at young motorists. It is hoped that improved claims experience will lead to cheaper car insurance premiums for young drivers and help to tackle the problem of uninsured drivers.
