Cheap motor insurers take the strain out of repetitive driving.
Insureyourmotor.co.uk, the cheap motor insurers of previous articles, are aware that Repetitive Strain Injuries became common, aggravated complaints amongst hypochondriacal and work-shy office Waller's a few years back. Then died down a bit. Well now, according to cheap motor insurers - Insureyourmotor.co.uk - it's set for a dramatic return. Only this time the amusingly agitating affliction has been taken out of the office space and brought smack, bang up to date. And, as noted by Insureyourmotor.co.uk's cheap motor insuring antenna - placed in your car. The cheap motor insurance writer who toils under the name of Insureyourmotor.co.uk, recalls one of his previous gigs and the time Health and Safety actually got an airing courtesy of a new, enthusiastic employee noting that we journalist's posture/wrist angles were all to cock. And long-headed enough to think she might top up her paltry wage by volunteering herself up for the made-up position not vacant. New chairs and keypad adjacent foams later, and my fellow journo's were grateful to her; I on the other hand sought immediate revenge, for her meddling now made it a distinct possibility that I could write more than the 2 article's per week given that arthritis/curvature of the spine was no longer a feasible excuse to sit at my desk all day and look out the window. Needless to say, the other (talented wordsmiths) got work-related bonuses, whilst I got to collect my P45 on the way out.
But cars, yeah, these baby's, according to cheap motor insurer - Insureyourmotor.co.uk - are very much here and now. Well that's the story that Ebaymotors.co.uk want you to believe, who whilst taking time out from making it easier for motorists to shift the previously unsellable via online auctions, have unearthed the truth that 4 million of you suffer from Repetitive Driving Injuries. Which to those unsure what this is exactly, and enjoy their position of having diminished responsibilities, is the pain caused by poor driving posture. If applying mathematical techniques and formulae this appears to be nearly half of all Britain 's motorists having experienced the symptoms of RDI. In extreme cases, only 15 minutes of continual driving will bring on such effects in drivers.
For those of you wanting to do something about the problem, then a chart has been drawn up. Admittedly it will do nothing to improve the conditions, yet it serves as a nice little Top 5 of 'The Most Common Repetitive Driving Injuries'. And they are - foot cramp, lumbar pain, stiff neck, side ache and headaches and/or eyestrain. As this article went to press I had no idea as to what order these legit complaints were in. Being in receipt of these critical facts that get in the way of a good drive out, you'd think that potential motorists/purchasers would therefore consider car comfort an important factor when it comes to snapping up a bargain. But no. As Ebaymotors spokes-lacky, Charlie Coney points out; "Despite eight out of ten drivers having suffered from RDI's [at some point], only one in five consider car comfort an important factor when purchasing a car." Now call them old fashioned if you like, but many pensioners give careful thought to ergonomics. Yet no one gives the subject as much respect as Professor Mark Porter. Ergonomics expert at Loughborough Uni, who was brought in on the study to have his opinion expressed. Or stolen, if you're sceptical.
After thinking about the topic for a while he jolted into life and noted the following observations. He says that there are 4 common types of posture-crime committed behind the wheel. And they are - The racing position. (where drivers sit low and far back, as if in a McLaren F1, instead of a Peugeot 106 quicksilver) The pimp's position. (slouched with one arm on the window, as if to signify to spectators that they are a homey on the lookout for a honey, when in actual fact they're called Malcolm and eat Findus Crispy Pancakes) Multi-taskers. (Sit upright with one hand on the gearstick, and think commerce thoughts without ever blinking) and Rollercoaster's. (Lurched forward over the wheel, often confused with the infirm who are slightly more slumped over the steering wheel)
Professor Porter passed further comment on his findings. In doing so saving me writing anything more; "Whichever position you drive in, the two most important things to remember when choosing your next car are: one, the greater the number of adjustable features within a car, the greater the likelihood of achieving a comfortable driving posture. Two, important adjustments include an in/out and up/down steering wheel and a seat with independent height and cushion tilt so you can set the height of the seat for headroom/vision and then control the cushion angle for ease of pedal operation & comfort."
The joint study also found that 4x4/SUV vehicles induce pain most quickly, and that women become uncomfortable more quickly than men.
