As Editor-in-Chief here at Insureyourmotor.co.uk, I'm looking to spend my bonus. It's a hefty one too, given that it's based on words, and as you can see for yourself, verbal diarrhoea is the creative affliction I nurse through my career. So I thought to myself, what better way to splash such immense cash than on a Merc SLR McLaren. Come on cheap motor insurers? Why else do you think I'm still here? Especially with Playboy knocking my door down every day. Anyhow, I'd set my sights on what I thought to be a superb example of the genre. Its description did after all, read like this;
For Sale - Mercedes Benz SLR McLaren.
One (not so) careful owner, only one set of keys unfortunately, nice motor, any white powder-type residue found inside was left as a result of previous owner's fastidious attention to interior polishing detailing. (Which dries to form this effect) Expertly Re-piped stitching on drivers seat a nice touch, and very rare on this model. Lowered suspension, thanks to ingenious new industry developments that suggest loading up the boot with various body-shaped kidnap victims will create the same look, at a fraction of the manufacturers registered retail price, Powerful car, great for getting out of tricky situations. (Although on this occasion sadly not fast enough).£300,000 ovno.
Move quick so as not to miss this once in a lifetime opportunity. Call me now on ***********.
Now, the way I look at it is this. You can't be too careful these days, as there are some seriously dodgy people out there who wear a lot of chains and carry a lot of cash about their beefy person; but this sounded pretty above board to me. Only one minor drawback. "You're too late. It's gone". I was naturally gutted, but the Police reassured me that it was in my best interests, and there would be another. The police? What? Suddenly I smelt a fish. It could have been last night's haddock still on my breath, but I was guessing it was something altogether more socially unacceptable. And I wasn't wrong.
You see, Mercedes-Benz's SLR McLaren may have been peppered with one automotive accolade forced next to another, but the car now lays claim to a new record. Merc's latest supercar now holds the dubious title of being the single most valuable vehicle ever to be stolen, yet recovered, and then returned to its rightful owner. By Tracker. Nope, not some keen-nostrilled sniffer-mutt trained by plod, but the UK 's leading nabbed vehicle specialist. With a little help from plod though it grieves me to add. They tipped them off probably, the exact point their job normally starts. And ends. Taken without the owners consent (or knowledge) by thieves who criminally turned the keys in the ignition and razzed off, it was tracked almost immediately after it left the scene outside an address in South Buckinghamshire . 50 minutes later the fuss died down as police had caught up with the culprits. Who had managed to get a whole 12 miles away in the 208mph/0-60 in under 3.8 second surface missile. Collars were felt, keys handed over and wrists slapped, all in a days work for plod and his new partner in the fight against doing any policing single-handedly - Constable Tracker.
Parita Patel is the Marketing Manager for TRACKER UK and they gabbled this incoherently down Insureyourmotor.co.uk's phone line; "Successfully recovering a vehicle, any vehicle, is extremely pleasing. While the Mercedes-Benz's SLR McLaren is the most valuable stolen vehicle we've ever tracked, its worth would not set it aside, in terms of receiving preferential treatment, from any of the 750,000+ vehicles equipped with a TRACKER unit here in the UK ." After uncrossing every crossable bone in their body and hoping the country at large would believe them.
March was a profitable month for the Tracker team. Not so for the criminal fraternity though, as the total value of stolen Merc's recovered during this period was some £601,000. Figures also just released show that Tracker was responsible for recovering more BMW's than any other marque during the same month, and for the seventh successive one at that. Totalling £680,000. Other top-end reclaiming success stories involved two Aston Martins (worth a combined £145,000) aswell as a unique Hummer Limo valued at £100,000 alone. When all the calculations were complete, and the ready-reckoner began smoking, Tracker suggested that in total - £3.16million quid's worth of vehicles were handed back to their registered owners. Not just cars either, motorbikes, vans, agricultural/heavy industrial machinery, and, most surprisingly, caravans added up to make the tally for the year so far in the region of a staggering £10million. Tracker's previous record for a single vehicle recovery was set in December last year when the company traced, and returned, a stolen Rolls Royce worth £270,000 to it's owner after it was stolen from outside the Hilton Hotel in Park Lane, London.
