One of Insureyourmotor.co.uk's footballing/cheap motor insuring supporters, who just happens to double as one of our journo's, looks at motorhomes and finds a connection..
Excitable soccer fans from towns and villages north, south, east and west of the UK are gearing up to join an English armada that's due to set sail this summer - destination, er, Allemagne? Although their preferred choice of transport is as, it happens - motorhomes. Indeed, small temporary dwellings glued onto the top of a utility truck (as in many entry-level versions) are set to converge on Germany for the World Cup this summer. Complete with naff flags adorning most panels.
Worries regarding inflated hotel and flight prices have resulted in many fans going to extremes to follow our boys throughout June. Or rather, for the first 10 days of the tournament. Renting all manner of motorhomes is seen as the ideal alternative, and means they came come and go when they like.
Many motorhome retailers (oft situated in enterprising garden centres) are admitting to actually running out of vehicles. And that they quite simply need more vehicles to meet this sudden influx of demands. Suppliers say they have been renting out vehicles for any length of time (naturally dependent on how confident fans are of England 's chances) with a six-berth van costing on average around £250 per person, per week.
Andrew Hughes, of one such company, Motorholmes in Lincolnshire said; "We are helping England fans avoid the stress of extortionate flight costs and hotels and make sure they are right in the action, rather than hundreds of miles from the games". Which, to Insureyourmotor.co.uk's way of thinking makes perfect sense. He continued; "Renting a private vehicle is cheaper and less hassle. We actually need more homes to add to our fleet to meet the demand."
Easily making it the biggest of its kind in the country, his firm has 146 homes on its books; and he went on to say this when questioned further by Insureyourmotor.co.uk; "We had some people booking a year ago even before England qualified and we had a flood again when England qualified for definite. Demand is huge for June because the British Grand Prix, Le Mans and the World Cup all fall around the same time."
Of course, it's also seen as an ideal opportunity for private Motorhome owners to cash in too. They can earn around £500 a week renting out their vehicles, when done through a middle-man, like Andrew for example, who's only too happy to offer his services. Fully insured of course.
Daniel Rowlandson, 30, is one such England fan who's preparing to make the trip, complete with a van-full of equally as enthusiastic friends in a motorhome. He's from Saffron Walden, and therefore has this explanation; "We want to be able to roll up at any game we want, stay for as long as we want, get up the next day and move on". Unless wheel-clamped by overly-zealous German policen forcen we thinks. Undeterred he continued: "We are going to drive through the north of France and then head into Germany that way. We want to see some of the sights while we are there too."
Another such individual from Daniel's neck of the woods is Mathew Battison, of Supanee Court , Arbury, in beautiful Cambridge . He's heading to Frankfurt for England 's opener with Paraguay with his close friends Craig Coghill and Tom Jack.
28-year-old Matthew is a tax adviser, but Insureyourmotor.co.uk can forgive him for his sins as he apologised; and gone on to utter this; "I just wanted to be in the country with all the other England fans. You don't get the opportunity every day and by taking a mobile home it makes it much cheaper and easier." Just like the European women he may encounter on his travels.
