Utilising broad grilles for expressive mouths and having their cute eyes stuck on the glass (worryingly looking like those crappy Halford's novelty sun blinds for your front windscreen) the actors showcased in the latest Disney outing sound to be more Peugeot than Walt. Slapping child-friendly faces on a collection of camper vans, fire trucks and bizarrely, Porsches, might be one route, or rather, route one, to a crescendo of ringing tills across the western world, but can it offer anything at all for the not-so-boy racers amongst us, who might be tempted to nudge the indicator toward the movie parking lot if it were for more than passing interest? Well yes actually, because as far as endorsements go, the name Paul Newman's would take some beating. Just ask any supermarket chain in the past few years. And he, along with some smart cars that aren't of German descent, is the star turn in what Disney and Pixar hope will be one of the hits of the summer, their latest in a line of collaborative film offerings - 'Cars'.
Having turned down Clint Eastwood's role, and instantaneous legend-status in Dirty Harry, albeit a few years back now, now Movie legend and occasional racer Paul Newman was determined not to make the same mistake twice in his career, hence he's back doing what he does best this summer. Having his voice hidden behind an animated car may not appear a natural next step for the nine times Oscar nominated, once winning actor, but given That his salad-dressing out-grosses his films nowadays he's happy to be back. Whether driving them for business or as his motor insurance hints - for social/domestic/leisure purposes. This is, after all remember, the man who Finished 2 nd in the 1979 Le Mans 24hr race in a Porsche 935, and coupled with the fact he owns half of the champ car (auto racing) team, Newman-Haas, he's fairly well-qualified to share the big screen with cars once more.
Cars are in his blood, one of Newman's vices if you like, so much so when asked as to what he loves most about life he paused not for a moment to muse; "the sound of a V8 engine".
So when the opportunity arose to lend his voice to that of an animated one, (car that is, and not a talking engine block) he didn't need time to think about It. Unfortunately nor did Owen Wilson, but that's another story.
In association with Pixar Animations and Walt Disney studios, the same stable that brought us 'Finding Nemo', the 12 highest grossing movie at the us box office history, the racing-themed 'Cars' is the work of director and screenwriter, John Lasseter, himself the man behind none other than 'Toy Story' and 'A Bugs Life'.This time however, they're resisting the urge to take us into the deep, the undergrowth, or the toy cupboard; and instead concentrating their combined efforts on the roads. This action-packed, fast-paced animated comedy-adventure is set inside the world of cars. Newman's is the distinctive voice behind a 1951 Hudson Hornet, answering to the name of Doc Hudson, described as a car with a mysterious past. His character is joined on the starting line up by Lightning McQueen, a hotshot rookie race car driven to succeed. (Although voiced by the underwhelming talent that is Wilson , he's stuck in first gear from the start) Looking like a sort of cross between a 1970's Dodge Charger and same generation Camaro, with a little modern-day Dodge Viper and Corvette added to the artists confused palette, the very notion of what it is meant to represent will keep seasoned motoring journo's arguing well into the kids flick.
The gist of the movie is as sugar-coated as you would come to expect of this genre of film, and not failing in its curriculum to teach our offspring's life's morals aims for the high ground once again. Therefore, somewhere along the way McQueen discovers that the finishing line isn't all that important, and that it's that well-trodden sentimental fudge about life itself that his chosen journey's all about. Something which time allows for when he gets stranded after an unexpected detour in the hicksville town of Radiator Springs, somewhere off the fabled Route 66. So the story goes. Not part of his plans, this turn of events happens as he travels across the country to the Big Piston Cup Championship over in California to compete against two seasoned pro's. This inadvertent pit stop affords our hero the time to acquaint himself with the townsfolk of Radiator Springs. Invariably offbeat but colourful characters, such as Sally Carrera, a 2002 Porsche, the aforementioned Newman-vehicle, Doc, and Mater, a rusty but trusty tow truck. Who you just know on a premise like that is going to annoy the nuts and bolts off you. Excepting Newman's vocal chords, the other 'stars' are voiced by an array of household names. If you live in America . Between them they help Lightning realise that winning trophies, fame and sponsorship aren't the most important, things in life, and that gas, working windscreen wipers and being shoed in the right tyres are. Billed as a high-octane delight for movie-goers of all ages (i.e. dad too, thanks to a bit of Newman's special brand of dressing drizzled in moderation throughout) the production is, as expected, slick, fast-moving and packed with career-best performances. From the animated stars.
